Amritsar
Day 60 and 61. Zero kms.
The road to Amritsar was fairly peaceful until we hit the edge of town where it turned into chaos, or so it seemed.
We opted for the Royal Castle Hotel, (very smart) and got price down to 1800 rupees.

Later we got a tuk-tuk to take us to a phone shop to get an Indian SIM card, Internet shop, money changer and later to the Golden Temple, (the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion). The temple is quite spectacular but very noisy – large speakers blast out what I suppose are religious songs. Hoards of people about.
All of this was accomplished at speed. The driver was, we think, trying to impress us… Frighten us more like! Plus the roads in the town are full of ruts so Johns injury was getting a good work out. Just what it needed.

Tired, we opt to eat in the hotel, a delicious Vegetable Tandoori Khazana, beer and coffee for 500r (10 euro) – excellent meal, so much better than the food in Pakistan.
We plan to stay here for 2 more nights so we can update the site, maintain bikes and have a rest.
Day 60 and 61 are spent swanning around Amritsar by tuk-tuk and resting. Still 3000 kilometers to Goa and my leg hurts.
Judging by the roads/towns, that wont be easy going.

Our stay in Amritsar was not the most peaceful. Our hotel is beside a large roundabout and the sound of blaring horns is incessant. The tuk-tuk driver who took us to the Golden Temple lurks around for us outside the hotel, but he’s an affable chap called Bunty, and despite his gradually increasing fees, we adopt him, (or did he adopt us?) .
The temperature hovers around 39 degrees and even at 8.30 in the morning it’s too hot and muggy to do anything.

In the evening the place seems to become more active, but a tuk-tuk ride through the streets of the old city is a heart-stopping journey, during which, unbelievably, no people or animals are hurt!
John acquires a new horn, as his has begun to imitate a wet fart, and Mick splashes out (200r) on some hair, (dog), clippers, as all the barbers are shut, and he’s tired of the Robinson Crusoe look. From here we will head South towards Jaipur.
New pictures are in the Gallery and on Blog entries from the Khunjerab Pass onwards.
